Throughout elementary school and most of middle school, you would not have caught me reading a book or even in the presence of books, for that matter. I would cringe every time a teacher assigned a reading assignment. Essentially, books and I were not friends. Oddly enough, eighth grade was the year I discovered my love for reading when my teacher assigned our class The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I was a little skeptical about reading it because it was, indeed, a book but after the first few chapters I could not put it down. About halfway through the book I realized something: books are pretty cool. And so my friendship with books began. Barnes & Noble gift cards became the key to my heart and books some of my most dependable friends. Which is why I doubtlessly agree with Ernest Hemingway's noble quotation: “There is no friend as loyal as a book.”
As corny as it may sound, I really like the idea of being able to see the world through another character’s eyes. You learn so much through reading and you learn in a way that cannot be taught, but must be experienced. Books teach you things that you cannot learn in a lecture hall or from taking notes because they express feeling. Books equip you with armor for the outside world and experiences from all of the characters you could possibly imagine. Just a few of my favorite “easy read” books include The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. Some of my favorite “deeper thinking” books include The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, Night by Elie Wiesel, and the many works of Shakespeare (A Midsummer Night's Dream, Macbeth, and of course, Romeo and Juliet).
Hey Victoria! I really like your blog it is well put together and i really enjoy the fact that I almost feel as if your are talking to me face to face. I noticed that some of the books you listed are all movies that came out so i'm kind of curious, did you see those movies and like it, before or after seeing it? Also since you seem to be pretty fond of Shakespeare I definitely recommend his tragedy "Hamlet". Its one of those books that once you start reading you do not want to stop until you reach the end. Anyway i'm really looking forward to reading your upcoming blogs, and if there are any more books that you would recommend Id be happy to hear!
ReplyDeleteI love the layout, clipart, and title in which you gave your first post; I think it just pulls everything together while matching up perfectly. We share the same story when it comes to reading however; I discovered my love at a much younger age. When it comes down to your love for reading, our views are identical. I to love the transportation to another world and the inevitable way that literature teaches you a lesson, which would not have been able to be taught otherwise. You are the first person however that I have ever heard to love Shakespeare other than an English professor, so for that I applaud you and ask how?
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I would like to admit that I love the look of your blog! It is just so colorful and happy, similar to the way you look at reading. It seems like you really evolved from where you first stood with books; going from never reading to falling in love with reading seems like a huge growth and change! Maybe one day I will feel this love for reading as you do, and I would love to. The Hunger Games Trilogy was actually one of the only books I have been hooked on, which is at least one similarity between the two of us. However, it seems like we have similar taste in books, so I hope to read some more of your future blogs such as this one, which inspired me to try to find my love for books!

ReplyDeleteThe presentation of your blog is absolutely amazing! I really drew me in. We defiantly share some reading experiences in the beginning of the blog but I'm very excited that you found that spark that made you decide to keep reading! Personally, I hope i get to a point where i find my spark that will aspire me to be a great independent reader. Does it still bother you today if you are assigned a book in school know that you are a bookworm, or does that still bother you? I'm very curious to know because I feel as if for me; even if i fell in love with reading I still would hate the forceful reading.
